CRM Case Study: Crescent Training

John Cook, Managing Director of Crescent Training Services Ltd, operates his company from its headquarters in Eastleigh, Hampshire and three other sites in southern England to provide a growing range of training and outsourcing services to small businesses sized up to 250 employees. Crescent Training has it's foundations in the break-up of the Government-owned Manpower organisation ten years ago. The original founder of Crescent Training worked for them in re-training the clients of the UK's Jobcentres. A management buyout (MBO) in October, 2001 allowed Crescent's new management team to engage their ambitions, shifting the focus to develop more commercial opportunities. Although still training and re-skilling the unemployed, Crescent are now energetically redirecting their 23 employees on more broadly-based activities to support small businesses with outsourced human resource functions. These range from management training and development to periodic employee appraisals, motivation and retention programmes, delivered on a national basis all over the UK.

Crescent Training's services are offered to small businesses, sometimes where no human resources department currently exists to support their employees. However, they see also a need to include management training in their portfolio of services, including that for business development for small companies. Since the MBO in October, 2001, John Cook explained that "the pace of change has shifted a few gears. We found that our company data lay in several different places. We needed to bring it all into one central location and have chosen WinShark crm." John felt they were in danger of losing control as their business entered a period of rapid growth and realised they did not have the time to learn how to use a complex solution. Crescent Training needed an "out-of-the-box" product, a full Client Relationship Management (CRM) solution, powerful enough to grow with his business, yet able to be used immediately. John knew of WinShark Limited and WinShark crm, a powerful yet low-cost solution designed to help small businesses to grow and to manage that growth. Most smaller companies recognise that a key to increased profitability lies in the efficient management of customer information. Many businesses maintain a simple database of their customers. However, by using a full CRM system, efforts can be targeted and measured more effectively. WinShark crm is such a system and will assist profitable growth in smaller businesses in three strategic areas:-

 Increasing sales from existing customers

 Gaining completely new customers

Managing business data more effectively for cost reduction

John contacted WinShark and, after an in-depth evaluation of WinShark crm by Mel Banting, his Programme Co-ordination Manager, Mel said "I have worked with many CRM systems but WinShark stands out in terms of power and price". John placed his first order for a single user licence for £99.99 in early August and they are setting up WinShark initially in Crescent Training's headquarters. They have begun to use WinShark and are mapping out their "parties" - the term used by WinShark to categorise business areas - into the following groups:-

 Prospective clients

 Existing customers

 Individual clients

 Employee record system

Each "party" in WinShark stores many levels of sub-data and all Crescent's customers are now stored under the first three bullet points above. Each customer can be tagged as actual or potential and business development plans worked out for each. The next phase of John's plans for WinShark crm include the very cost-effective, selective mass e-mailing of prospects and clients and a network linking all his sites, running WinShark on a multi-user basis. These ideas were unthinkable before WinShark provided the focus to allow John to plan for growth and the provision of better services to his growing client-base.

As John Cook says: "WinShark is helping to reduce the complexity of our current situation and is showing us the way ahead. "
